My top 5 Twitter Tips: How to Work It for You

Twitter is a confusing space to many small business owners, but it shouldn’t be! If you have a message or products that reaches broadly outside of the local market, then you should be using Twitter. It holds tremendous networking potential worldwide, not to mention the potential to increase web traffic in powerful ways.

Tips for using Twitter

There are a few things you should know when entering the Twitter-scape.

1. Complete your profile fully

Inclue an about, a profile image, a cover photo, and a website. Whatever you do, don’t leave the “egg.” You’ll never earn followers that way and you won’t be taken seriously if your profile looks like a shell.

2. Use your face, not your logo

Come out from behind the logo. We want to see you and get to know who you are as a person! Of course we also want to know all about your business and expertise, but show a little personality too. The first step towards that is using a photo, not a logo, to represent yourself on Twitter.

3. Before you follow anyone, write at least 10 tweets.

This will give you the opportunity to get the hang of things and it will make your profile look interesting and legit to potential new followers.

4. Follow, follow, follow.

Don’t be afraid to follow! You can follow contacts from your email list, that’s a great first start. Search some hashtags that are relative to your industry and follow interesting people that are using them. Aim to follow at least 300 people on your first go. You can do it, don’t be shy!

5. Reply and engage with conversations

Twitter is all about conversations, don’t be holed up in your own universe. Find conversations that interest you and join in on the talk! It’s a great way to make new connections.

6. Thank new followers for joining you

By now you’re likely getting people to follow you or follow you back, cheers! A nice thing to do is thank them for following you. It starts a conversation and makes you seem like a real person which is a very welcome thing! A simple thank you can go a long way.
